New World City my arse: Brisbane rent is ridonkulous
I’ve been doing a lot of research about where I’m going to be for the next part of my life. One thing that I’ve noticed is how much more expensive it is to rent an apartment in Brisbane compared to Melbourne.
I understand Melbourne is much larger and has more accommodation to offer, but Brisbane needs a reality check. It labels itself as a New World City, yet the services it offers still resemble a big country town. I can have a modern 1 bedroom apartment in the centre of Melbourne, surrounded by shops and services, in most cases 100$ cheaper than what the same would cost me in Brisbane city.
Except without the same levels of services.
The only major supermarket that stays open in Brisbane until 10pm is at the Airport, while Coles and Woolworths don’t stay open past 9pm on a weekday. Bus and train services, while improved from years ago, continue to be some of the most expensive in the world (and you still have to wait 30 minutes for most trains). And if you want food in the city past 10PM you are limited to Hungry Jacks, McDonalds and Pig & Whistle.
New World City my arse. It’s an overpriced city.

Having spent a good 18 months living away from Brisbane, I feel I can safely say my quality of life has never been so good.
It’s expensive to rent, buy, catch public transport, drive, park your car, or rent a CityCycle bike. The public transport is a joke and if you choose to use the two superfluous toll roads near the CBD, that’s also a rip.
The Airtrain has only just started running later into the night and sucks to be you if you want to be out in public past 10PM and get something to get/coffee/do anything that doesn’t involve getting maggot.I wouldn’t go as far as saying Brisbane is shit, but it’s suffering some pretty intense growing pains. I’m happy living in Rockhampton and taking my weekends away in Melbourne.
I have nothing to add that hasn’t already been said.
